Head of Clinical Pharmacology Department. Oct - Dec Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. I was working on metalloproteinases in metastases of breast cancer. This collaboration was funded by the Open society fund, Soros foundation. The sound of the project concept is the preservation of traditional aromatic and medicinal plants common in Western Balkan countries, with unique and insufficiently explored potential by using them to prepare new nutritional supplements or hygienically-pharmaceutical products.
Aromatic and medicinal plants in the Balkan area are characterized by their unique, pure composition, unaffected by pollution in the over-industrialized areas. The scientific objectives of the project are related to the possibility of exploiting experience and tradition of the three partner countries: Romania, Serbia and Albania in processing, investigating the chemical and biochemical structure, and creating new, original products. Compared to the current state of knowledge the project proposes identifying, isolating and characterizing new active principles, conditioning and preparing nutritional supplements and original hygienic-pharmaceutical and technical products to add value to traditional plant crops.
The main estimated results are: Selection of indigenous aromatic and medicinal plants with wide applications, designing new extraction methods and identifying direction of use, new active principles extracted from aromatic and medicinal Balkan area, new nutritional products based on indigenous plant extracts, strategies for aromatic and medicinal plant preservation from Balkan countries. Romania has a rich experience in extracting, characterizing and formulating new nutritional supplements and will extend the experience to Serbian and Albanian partners with the final aim of preserving traditional plant culture and biodiversity.
The project will have an economic, ecologic and social impact related to the possibility of expanding cultures, creating added-value products which will contribute to environmental protection and health of population in the area. The Seminar SWEP gathered prominent editors of biomedical journals, distinguished professors and scientists. The aim of the meeting is to provide fundamental help to PhD students in their PhD thesis, because we all hope that their current topics in the field of scientific publishing will at least be a road sign, how to act, and what to avoid.
